What is a solid surface worktop?

A solid surface worktop is a board of acrylic solid surface: natural minerals bound in acrylic resin, the same material all the way through, with no core and no surface layer to wear off. Lengths are glued with colour-matched adhesive and sanded flush, so a run of worktops reads as one surface. It is non-porous, it cuts with woodworking tools, and a light scratch can be sanded out. It is also called an acrylic worktop.

Is solid surface the same as Corian?

Corian is a brand. It is DuPont's acrylic solid surface, fitted through approved fabricators who template, make and install the top. Coreluxe is a different brand of acrylic solid surface. We sell it as standard boards (a 3m worktop, a 2m breakfast bar and an upstand in each decor) that your own fitter cuts, joins and finishes on site. The material type is the same; the brand, the decors and the way you buy and fit it are not.

How much do solid surface worktops cost?

Coreluxe solid surface worktops start at £498 including VAT for a 3000 x 650 x 19mm board in the plain, granite-effect and quartz-effect decors. The sparkle, Carrara marble and terrazzo decors cost more, and upstands are priced on each range page. Delivery is £36 per order however many boards you buy, or collect free from Burnley.

That is a board price: cutting, joining and finishing are by your fitter. For comparison, Checkatrade's Corian cost guide (price table updated May 2024) gives a ballpark average of about £625 per square metre for Corian, with installation labour listed separately at about £250 a day.

Are solid surface worktops any good?

Yes, if you want a worktop whose joins are hard to see. Solid surface is waterproof and non-porous, it takes an undermount sink, a long run can look like one piece, and light scratches can be sanded out rather than lived with. Coreluxe worktops and breakfast bars carry a 10-year manufacturer guarantee. The limits are below.

What are the downsides of solid surface worktops?

  • Heat: it is not heatproof. A pan straight off the hob, a grill or a deep fryer can mark it, so a trivet is a must.
  • Scratches: it can scratch. Light marks sand out, and a final sand to 500 grit makes scratches less visible; deep scratches, chips and burns need a solid surface fabricator.
  • Fitting: cutting, joining and finishing need the right tools, a router and solid surface adhesive. It is a job for a fitter, not a quick DIY swap.
  • Chemicals: acetone, paint remover, oven cleaner and drain or toilet cleaners damage the surface.
  • Cost: it costs more than laminate and compact laminate.

Solid surface or quartz?

Quartz is an engineered stone that a specialist measures, makes to size and fits. Coreluxe solid surface is bought as boards that your own fitter cuts and joins on site. The joins are glued and sanded flush so they are hard to see, and light scratches can be sanded out, but it is softer than quartz and scratches more easily. Choose quartz if you want stone; choose solid surface for a repairable top with discreet joins. Our quartz-effect decors are Sahara Ivory and Sahara Shell, and Luna Ice has a quartz-style sparkle.

Solid surface or compact laminate?

Compact laminate (boards from £268) is a slim, square-edged slab joined with a jointing kit and colour-matched sealant, and a deep gouge cannot be sanded out. Solid surface is glued with colour-matched adhesive and sanded flush, and light scratches can be sanded out. Both are waterproof and both take an undermount sink. See compact laminate worktops to compare.

Matt or satin finish?

Luna Ice and Carrara Marble have a matt finish, which solid surface fitting guidance recommends for high-use areas. The other six decors are satin, with a little more sheen, which needs a little more care to keep even. Either way, the fitter sands the whole top at the end of the job for an even finish.

Fitting and care

  • Before fitting: leave the boards at room temperature for 24 hours. Carry them with two people, short edge vertical, and keep the protective film on until the cutting is finished.
  • Cutting: a plunge saw with a fine-tooth or solid surface blade, a router with tungsten carbide cutters to finish every cut, several shallow passes, and M-class dust extraction with an FFP2 mask.
  • Joints: clean both edges with denatured alcohol, glue with the colour-matched 50ml adhesive (one cartridge covers one or two straight joints) and sand flush. Use the White, Light Grey, Pergamon or Rice adhesive for your decor.
  • Gaps and supports: leave 1mm per metre at each wall for expansion, and support any overhang over 150mm with a steel plate or plywood.
  • Upstands: fix them to the wall with silicone, not solid surface adhesive.
  • Cleaning: a damp microfibre cloth and mild detergent, then dry it to stop water spots in hard water areas. A non-abrasive solid surface cleaner keeps the finish even. Keep an offcut for any future colour-matched repair.

Solid surface worktop questions

Is solid surface the same as Corian?

Corian is one brand of acrylic solid surface, made by DuPont and fitted through its approved fabricators. Coreluxe is a different brand of acrylic solid surface, sold here as standard boards that your own fitter cuts, joins and finishes on site.

Are solid surface worktops waterproof?

Yes. Solid surface is non-porous and waterproof, so there is no core to swell at a sink or a cut edge, and nothing for spills to soak into.

Can you put hot pans on a solid surface worktop?

No. Always use a trivet or hot pad. The supplier rates Coreluxe to 180°C, but a pan straight off the hob, a grill or a deep fryer can mark any solid surface.

Can solid surface worktops be joined without a seam?

Yes. The two edges are machined square, glued with a colour-matched two-part solid surface adhesive and sanded flush, so a run reads as one surface. Joints are hardest to hide in veined and large-chip decors, where a mitre joint is the better choice.

Can a scratched solid surface worktop be repaired?

Light scratches and stains can be sanded out because the material is the same all the way through. Deep scratches, chips and burns are a job for a solid surface fabricator.

Can I fit an undermount sink in a solid surface worktop?

Yes. The cut-out is made with a router, internal corners are drilled with a 12mm or larger bit rather than cut square, the visible edge is sanded to match the top, and the cut-out is kept at least 75mm from any joint.

How thick are Coreluxe solid surface worktops?

Worktops and breakfast bars are 19mm thick. Upstands are 10mm, or 12mm in Luna Ice and Carrara Marble.

Which adhesive do I need for my decor?

White for Arctic White, Moonstone White and Sahara Ivory; Light Grey for Whispering Grey; Pergamon (a pale cream) for Sahara Shell; and Rice for Luna Ice, Carrara Marble and Traditional Terrazzo. Each is a 50ml cartridge used with the solid surface applicator gun.

Do the worktops come with finished edges?

No. Every board has square, unfinished edges and a protective film. Your fitter cuts it to size and sands the edges to match the top.

How are solid surface worktops delivered?

By two-man delivery, £36 per order however many boards, or free collection from Burnley. Boards are fragile until fitted, so store them flat and face up.
