White Radiators

White is still the finish most people fit. The catch is usually choice, not colour.

Most retailers carry eight or ten white column sizes and expect your wall to cooperate. There are 114 here, across three ranges: our own DUSC Columns, the Kartell K-Rad Laser Klassic and the Senator Vintage.

Between them you get 2, 3, 4 and 6 column depths, horizontals from 300mm to 750mm high, verticals at 1500mm and 1800mm, and widths from 245mm to 1578mm.

Measure your pipe centres first. Pipe centres are the distance between your existing valve tails. Match that number and the new radiator goes straight onto the pipework you already have, with no lifted floorboards and no re-piping. It is on every DUSC Columns listing.

How many columns

2 Column68–92mm

The slimmest option. Hallways, landings and bedrooms, or anywhere a door or a walkway is tight.

3 Column100–118mm

The all-rounder, and the most popular by a distance. Roughly a third more heat than a 2 column of the same height and width.

4 Column140–160mm

Living rooms, dining rooms and period properties with high ceilings, bay windows or solid walls.

6 Column243mm

Maximum output from the least wall. Extensions, conservatories, and rooms that have never quite warmed up.

White 2 column 500 x 965mm — 3,124 BTU. The slim option at 92mm deep, for under a window.

White 2 column vertical 1500 x 425mm — 3,226 BTU. Same output from 425mm of wall, if width is the problem.

8 to 14 sq mdouble bedroom, dining room

Needs roughly 5,500 to 7,300 BTU.

White 4 column 600 x 965mm — 5,470 BTU. The usual answer at this size.

White 6 column 400 x 965mm — 5,552 BTU. Only 400mm high, so it fits under a low sill. Deeper at 243mm.

14 to 20 sq mliving room

Needs roughly 7,800 to 10,400 BTU.

White 4 column 600 x 1370mm — 7,813 BTU. Full width along one wall.

White 6 column 600 x 965mm — 7,928 BTU. Same output from 400mm less width, by going deeper.

Over 20 sq mopen plan

Needs roughly more than 10,400 BTU.

White 4 column 750 x 1370mm — 9,766 BTU. The highest output in the range. Above roughly 25 sq m you are into two radiators rather than one, which also heats the space more evenly.

Common questions

Are all these whites the same shade?

They are all a standard white radiator finish, but they come from three manufacturers, so there can be a slight difference in tone and in how much sheen the powder coat carries. If you are fitting several in one room or along one hallway, order them all from the same range.

Will one fit my existing pipework?

Usually, if the pipe centres match. Measure centre to centre across the valves on your current radiator and look for the same figure on the listing. Fitting new valves at the same time adds roughly 90mm to the overall width.

Horizontal or vertical?

Horizontals sit under windows and along low walls, from 300mm to 750mm high. Verticals stand 1500mm or 1800mm tall and are the answer when you have height but almost no width. A vertical will normally out-perform a horizontal on the same square of wall.

What guarantee do they carry?

It depends on the range. DUSC Columns and Kartell K-Rad carry five years, and the Senator Vintage range carries twenty. The cover is stated on each product page, and every size in this category ships free to mainland UK.

Do I need feet and valves?

Wall brackets and fixings are supplied. Feet are decorative rather than structural and can be added from the dropdown on horizontal listings where they are offered. Valves are always sold separately so you can pick chrome, black or brass from radiator valves and accessories.
