How much do laminate worktops cost?
Our laminate worktop boards start at £109.99 including VAT. Longer 4.1m boards, 670mm-deep worktops and 900mm breakfast bars cost more, and each decor has matching upstands, splashbacks and edging strips priced on its range page. Delivery is £30 per order however many boards you buy, or collect free from Burnley.
Are laminate worktops any good?
Yes. A Formica Originals worktop has a high-pressure laminate surface that is non-porous, fully water-resistant, hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean, with a 10-year guarantee. It costs less than solid wood, compact laminate or FENIX NTM and comes in the widest choice of looks. Treat it sensibly: use a trivet under hot pans, a chopping board for knives, and an edging strip on any exposed end.
What are the downsides of laminate worktops?
- Heat: a hot pan can mark the surface, so always use a trivet or heat mat.
- Knives: cutting straight on it will scratch it, so use a chopping board.
- Repairs: deep chips and burns cannot be sanded out the way solid wood can.
- Edges: only the front edge is finished, so cut ends need an edging strip and sealing.
- Edge style: the front edge is curved; for a square, slim edge choose compact laminate worktops.
Laminate or solid wood worktops?
Laminate costs less (boards from £109.99), needs no oiling and comes in the widest choice of looks. Solid wood (boards from £123) is real timber that can be sanded back and re-oiled, but it needs oiling before use and more care around water. 22mm or 38mm laminate worktop?
38mm is the classic kitchen worktop thickness and most of our decors come in it. 22mm gives a slimmer, more modern edge. Both have the same Formica surface and rounded front edge, so choose the decor you like first, then the thickness it is made in.
Fitting and care
- Cutting: cut on site with standard woodworking tools, or order a cut-to-size board.
- Edges: fit an edging strip to any exposed end and seal cut edges, including sink and hob cut-outs, before fitting.
- Cleaning: wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive or solvent-based cleaners and undiluted bleach.
- Heat and knives: always use a trivet or heat mat and a chopping board.
Laminate worktop questions
Are laminate worktops waterproof?
The Formica surface is non-porous and fully water-resistant, so spills wipe straight off. The board's cut ends are not, so fit an edging strip to any exposed end and seal cut edges, including sink and hob cut-outs, before fitting.
Can you put hot pans on a laminate worktop?
Not directly. Always use a trivet or heat mat under hot pans, because direct, sustained heat can damage the surface over time.
Can I cut a laminate worktop myself?
Yes. Formica Originals worktops can be cut on site with standard woodworking tools. If you prefer, we can cut them to size for you, ready in 3 to 7 working days.
Can you fit an undermount sink to a laminate worktop?
Yes. Formica Originals worktops work with undermount or top-mount sinks.
What thickness are laminate worktops?
Our laminate worktops come in 38mm, the classic thickness, or 22mm for a slimmer edge. Each decor is made in one or both thicknesses.
Are there matching upstands, splashbacks and edging strips?
Yes. Each decor has matching pieces in the same finish, listed with their sizes and prices on the range page.
What is the difference between laminate and solid laminate worktops?
A laminate worktop has a decorative laminate surface on a thicker board with a curved front edge. A solid (compact) laminate worktop is one solid slab, 12mm or 20mm thick, waterproof right through with a square edge. We sell solid laminate as compact laminate worktops.
What guarantee do laminate worktops have?
