De Terra beech worktops are built from solid European beech staves - warm blonde tones and a fine even grain that laminate can only imitate. Sanded ready to oil, and made to be lived on for decades.
These worktops arrive sanded and unoiled. They must be oiled before they go in - every face, every cut edge and the underside, because a sealed edge is what keeps water out of the timber around a sink.
Allow two to three coats and one 500ml tin per 3m board, every face. Osmo TopOil from GBP 24. Full instructions: installation and aftercare guide.
Beech brings a warm blonde tone and a fine, even grain that suits both traditional and contemporary kitchens. It is the timber butchers blocks have been made from for generations - hard and tight-grained. Each De Terra board is built from carefully selected 40mm solid beech staves - not veneer, not laminate - so the character runs right through the worktop and it can be sanded and re-finished for decades of service.
Boards come sanded and un-oiled with a clean square edge. Choose the slimmer 27mm profile or the substantial 40mm, with 960mm-wide breakfast bars for islands and a matching upstand to finish the wall joint.
Supplied un-oiled - finish it your way
Treat all faces and edges with a food-safe worktop oil before installation. Oiling deepens the colour, seals the timber against moisture and keeps the surface hygienic.

Apply 2-3 coats of food-safe worktop oil to every face, edge and cut-out - including the underside - before the board is fitted. This is essential on an un-oiled top.
Every 3-6 months drop a little water on the surface. If it beads and sits proud the oil is working. If it soaks in and darkens the timber it is time to re-oil.
Wipe up standing water promptly, especially around the sink and joints. Oiled beech resists moisture well but no timber likes being left wet.
Always use a trivet or pan stand. Hot pans placed directly on timber will scorch the surface.
Marks, scratches or ring stains can be sanded out and the area re-oiled - the worktop returns to new condition. No laminate can do this.

No - De Terra boards arrive sanded and un-oiled so you can choose your own finish. Apply 2-3 coats of a food-safe worktop oil (Danish oil or a hard-wax oil) to all faces and edges before installation.
100% solid European beech. The boards are built from 40mm wide solid staves bonded for stability, so the timber runs the full thickness and can be sanded and re-finished.
40mm is the classic solid wood look with maximum rigidity for long spans and cut-outs. 27mm gives a slimmer contemporary line and costs less. Both are full solid beech.
Use the 960mm-wide boards - 2m or 3m. The extra width over a standard 635mm worktop covers seating overhangs and island units.
Beech works easily with standard woodworking tools, so most fitters cut and shape it on site. Remember to oil every cut edge and cut-out. Contact us if you need help before ordering.
Beech is lighter and warmer in tone with a finer more even grain - and it costs less than oak for the same sizes. Oak is slightly harder with a bolder open grain and darkens more as it ages. Both oil to a rich finish and both last decades. If you want a bright uniform look at the best price choose beech; if you want bold grain character choose oak.
Yes - beech is the classic butchers block timber. Its tight close grain does not harbour food debris the way open-grained woods can, which is why professional chopping blocks have been made from beech for generations. Keep it well oiled and always use a separate chopping board for day-to-day cutting to protect the finish.
