Why choose the Kartell K-Rad Aspen Double?

The K-Rad Aspen is consistently one of the UK's top-selling designer vertical radiator ranges and the double panel version is the performance choice of the collection. Two sets of oval tubes produce significantly more heat than the single panel from the same wall footprint - making it ideal for larger or harder-to-heat rooms. Built from mild steel, pressure tested to 7.8 bar, and backed by a 5 year manufacturer guarantee.

The textured grey finish sets this radiator apart from standard anthracite alternatives. The matt texture is more tactile, more premium looking, and significantly more resistant to chips and scratches - especially important in high traffic areas like hallways and kitchens.

Why vertical radiators are the smart choice for modern UK homes

Over the last decade vertical designer radiators have moved from a niche luxury product to a mainstream heating solution in UK homes. The fundamental challenge in modern homes is that wall space is increasingly at a premium. Open-plan living, larger windows, fitted furniture, and contemporary interior design all compete for the same wall space that traditional horizontal radiators used to occupy under window sills.

Vertical radiators solve this problem elegantly. By running upwards rather than across, they take up a fraction of the horizontal wall space whilst delivering the same or greater heat output. A 1800mm tall radiator at 300mm wide occupies just 300mm of skirting-level wall space - less than a single door width - yet can heat a medium-sized room effectively.

The K-Rad Aspen double panel takes this a step further. Where the single panel suits smaller rooms comfortably, the double panel opens up the Aspen range to living rooms, open-plan kitchen diners, and larger bedrooms - rooms that would traditionally require a wide horizontal panel radiator.

5 Year Manufacturer Guarantee

All radiators in this range are covered by a 5 year guarantee from Kartell UK, giving you complete peace of mind. The guarantee covers all manufacturing defects and is registered directly with Kartell UK.

Installation guidance

All three sizes in this range use a wall to pipe centres measurement of 51mm. Pipe centres vary by width - 300mm, 420mm, or 540mm depending on the size selected. All necessary wall fixings are supplied as standard.

This radiator projects 79mm from the wall and is compatible with both angled and straight radiator valves. Maximum working pressure is 7.8 bar. Suitable for sealed and open vented central heating systems running on gas, oil, or compatible electric heating elements.

At 79mm deep the double panel projects 16mm further from the wall than the single panel version - factor this in if you are installing near furniture or in a tight space. We recommend a minimum clearance of 50mm in front of the radiator for effective heat circulation.

Professional installation is strongly recommended. Connection to a gas central heating system must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Watch - How to install a vertical radiator

The video below walks you through the full radiator installation process step by step. We recommend watching this before your installation day to make sure you have all the tools and materials ready.

What to check before installing your new radiator

Pipe centres: Measure the distance between your existing flow and return pipes at skirting board level. This needs to match the pipe centres of the radiator you have ordered - 300mm, 420mm, or 540mm for this range.

Wall type: Solid brick, plasterboard, and stud walls all require different fixings. For plasterboard or stud walls you will need to locate the studs or use appropriate plasterboard fixings - never hang a radiator on plasterboard fixings alone.

Bleed valve: The radiator comes with a bleed valve pre-fitted. Ensure the bleed valve is accessible once the radiator is hung and that you have a radiator bleed key to hand.

System inhibitor: Always add central heating inhibitor to your system when installing a new radiator. This protects against corrosion and sludge build-up that can reduce efficiency over time.

Which valve type do I need?

Corner valves are the most common type in modern UK homes. The valve body turns through 90 degrees, connecting pipework that comes through the wall horizontally to the radiator connection at the bottom. If your pipes come out of the wall at skirting level this is almost certainly the type you need.

Angled valves are designed for pipework that comes up through the floor. Common in older properties and in rooms where the floor structure makes wall-mounted pipework impractical.

Straight valves are used where the pipe and radiator connection are in direct alignment - a relatively uncommon configuration in UK homes but occasionally found in older plumbing setups.

If you are unsure which type you need, take a photo of your existing pipework and contact our team at info@plumbxtra.co.uk - we will confirm the right valve type for your installation.

TRV vs manual valves - which is better?

A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) automatically adjusts the flow of hot water through your radiator based on the ambient room temperature. When the room reaches your set temperature the TRV reduces the flow, saving energy and maintaining a consistent comfort level.

For most UK homes TRV valves are the better choice. They can reduce heating bills by up to 40% compared to manual valves according to the Energy Saving Trust, by ensuring rooms are only heated to the temperature you need. They are also now required under Part L of the Building Regulations for most new radiator installations in the UK.

The only exception is the radiator in the same room as your main thermostat - this one should always have a manual valve or a TRV locked in the fully open position, otherwise the two thermostats can interfere with each other.

Not sure which valves to order? Contact our team at info@plumbxtra.co.uk with your pipe configuration and we will recommend the right valves for your installation.

Frequently asked questions

This radiator is available in three widths - 300mm, 420mm, and 540mm. All three are 1800mm tall with the same textured grey finish, 79mm depth, and 5 year guarantee. BTU output ranges from 4,664 BTU (300mm) up to 8,397 BTU (540mm).

The double panel has two sets of oval tubes producing significantly more heat output than the single panel. The double panel projects 79mm from the wall compared to 63mm for the single. For example the 1800x540mm double delivers 8,397 BTU compared to approximately 4,309 BTU for the single - nearly double the heat output from the same wall footprint. Choose double panel for larger or poorly insulated rooms requiring over 5,000 BTU.

Textured Grey is Kartell UK's official product name for this finish. It is a dark matt powder-coat finish very similar in appearance to what the industry commonly refers to as anthracite. The textured surface is more durable than a standard smooth anthracite powder coat, making it more resistant to chips and scratches.

With 8,397 BTU (2,462W) at Delta T60, the 540mm wide version suits rooms of approximately 105-129 square feet - ideal for large bedrooms, living rooms, and open-plan spaces. Always add 10-15% to your calculated BTU requirement to account for heat loss on the coldest days.

Valves are not included and must be purchased separately. We stock a full range of matching Kartell K-Rad textured grey valves in angled, corner, and straight configurations to perfectly complement this radiator. Contact our team at info@plumbxtra.co.uk for recommendations.

Yes - compatible with all wet central heating systems including combi boilers, system boilers, and regular boilers on gas or oil. Can also work with air source heat pumps, though output at lower flow temperatures will differ from the quoted Delta T60 figures. Always consult a qualified heating engineer when connecting to a heat pump system.

Yes - all radiators in the K-Rad Aspen range come with a 5 year manufacturer guarantee from Kartell UK, covering all manufacturing defects. This is one of the best guarantees available on a designer radiator in this price range.

All three sizes in this range project 79mm from the wall. This is 16mm more than the single panel version which projects 63mm. We recommend a minimum clearance of 50mm in front of the radiator for safe heat circulation and valve access.

Yes - this radiator is suitable for bathroom installation provided it is connected to your central heating system by a qualified installer and installed in compliance with Part P building regulations.

This radiator is pressure tested to 7.8 bar, which exceeds the requirements of virtually all standard UK domestic central heating systems. Most UK central heating systems operate at between 1 and 2 bar, so this radiator has a significant safety margin above typical operating pressures.

Buyer's Guide - Choosing the Right Designer Vertical Radiator

Everything you need to know before buying a designer vertical radiator for your home.

How BTU works and room sizing

BTU (British Thermal Unit) measures the heat output of a radiator. This double panel range delivers from 4,664 BTU up to 8,397 BTU. As a simple guide:

Small room (bathroom/WC): 1,500-2,500 BTU
Medium room (bedroom): 2,500-5,000 BTU
Large room (living room): 5,000-10,000 BTU

Always factor in ceiling height, insulation quality, number of windows, and whether the room is north or south facing.

Pro tip: Always add 10-15% to your calculated BTU requirement to allow for heat loss on the coldest days of the year.
Single vs double panel - which is right for you?

Single panel - 63mm deep, lighter, more contemporary profile. Delivers around half the BTU of the equivalent double panel. Best for rooms requiring under 5,000 BTU.

Double panel - 79mm deep, heavier, but produces significantly more heat from the same wall footprint. Best for larger rooms, open-plan spaces, or rooms with high heat loss.

If your BTU calculation comes out above 5,000 the double panel is the better choice for reliable, comfortable warmth.

Rule of thumb: Double panel delivers roughly double the BTU of single panel at the same dimensions.
Why textured grey is the finish to choose

Grey has overtaken white as the most searched-for radiator colour in the UK and textured grey in particular has become the go-to choice for interior-conscious homeowners:

Durability: The textured surface is far more resistant to chips and fingerprints than smooth finishes.

Versatility: Works beautifully against white walls, exposed brick, wood panelling, and dark feature walls.

Premium look: Creates an architectural feel that smooth anthracite cannot replicate.

Coordination: Matching textured grey valves are available to complete the look.

What to check before ordering

BTU output: Use our free BTU calculator to confirm you have enough heat for your room.

Pipe centres: Measure your existing pipework - 300mm, 420mm, or 540mm for this range.

Wall projection: This radiator projects 79mm - check furniture clearance.

Wall type: Solid walls, plasterboard, and stud walls need different fixings.

Valves: Not included - order matching textured grey valves at the same time.

Guarantee: 5 years from Kartell UK - keep your receipt safe.

Valve tip: Order matching K-Rad textured grey valves at the same time for a perfectly coordinated installation.

Energy efficiency and heat pump compatibility

Lower flow temperature operation

This radiator can operate at lower flow temperatures than a traditional panel radiator, making it more compatible with modern condensing boilers running at 60-70 degrees C. Lower flow temperatures mean your boiler runs more efficiently, reducing energy consumption and running costs.

Heat pump compatibility

Air source heat pumps operate most efficiently at flow temperatures of 35-55 degrees C. Whilst this radiator can work with a heat pump, the BTU output at these lower temperatures will be significantly less than the quoted Delta T60 figures. A heating engineer should calculate the adjusted output for your specific heat pump setup.

TRV valves save energy

Fitting thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) with this radiator allows you to control the temperature of each room independently. Turning down rooms you are not using by just 1 degree C can reduce your heating bill by up to 10% according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Radiator sizing matters

Oversizing a radiator wastes energy - the boiler has to heat more water than necessary. Undersizing means the room never reaches the desired temperature. Getting the BTU calculation right for your specific room is the single most important step in an energy-efficient installation.

Designer vertical radiators - a complete guide for UK homeowners

Designer vertical radiators have transformed the UK heating market over the past decade. Once considered a premium luxury, they are now the standard choice for homeowners who want both effective heating and considered interior design. The shift has been driven by several factors - changing home layouts, rising energy costs, and a growing awareness that radiators do not have to be purely functional objects hidden under window sills.

The rise of open-plan living has been the single biggest driver of vertical radiator adoption in the UK. As walls came down between kitchens and living rooms, the traditional under-window radiator position became less practical. Vertical radiators offered a solution - positioning heat sources on available wall sections without compromising the open-plan aesthetic.

Energy efficiency considerations have also played a role. Taller radiators with a larger surface area can operate at lower flow temperatures whilst still delivering effective heat output - an important characteristic for compatibility with air source heat pumps, which the UK Government is actively promoting through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The K-Rad Aspen Double Textured Grey sits at an interesting intersection of all these trends - a radiator that delivers the heat output of a traditional panel radiator, the aesthetic of a designer radiator, and the durability of a product backed by a leading UK manufacturer with a 5 year guarantee.

The Kartell K-Rad Aspen is one of the best-selling designer vertical radiator ranges in the UK - trusted by homeowners, plumbers, and heating engineers alike. Also searched for as: Kartell Aspen double anthracite 1800mm, K-Rad Aspen double grey vertical radiator, KRAD Aspen double textured grey 1800mm, Kartell double anthracite vertical radiator, K-Rad Aspen double panel 1800.
